What's with the extra "R"?

Mom: He lives in Warshington.

Sister: Mom, there's no "R" in Washington.

Mom: Yes there is, listen: W-A-R-S-H-I-N-G-T-O-N.

Sister: *Sigh* You added the "R" when you said it. There is no "R." Just like there is no "R" in washrag or washing machine.

Mom: Uh, yes there is! Warshrag - warshing machine! See??
